I was determined to persevere in the name of getting to the good bit, but so far The First Law trilogy has been somewhat limp. I love an antihero, so if this can’t get me on board nothing can. Also, literally everyone in this series is too flawed to even resemble the traditional hero. It tackles themes of war, revenge and disfigurement, all of which can offer the potential for great character development. The setting is a grim Medieval-style world. The thing is, there is a lot about this series that would normally appeal to me. The Blade Itself was decent, but at the time I was too ambivalent to progress on to Before They Are Hanged.Īm I glad that I went back? This is a 2.5 review, so it’s debatable. As a general rule, I don’t reread books, so I need to get to sequels promptly.
